Middle school students visit AOSS

On January 23, 2013, twenty-nine middle school students from O.L. Smith Middle School in Dearborn visited AOSS as guests of the Student Space Systems Fabrications Lab.  Professor Mark Moldwin, the student group sponsor, encouraged the young visitors to seriously consider entering science, technology, engineering and math career fields.  The trip came about through the college students’ desire to foster interest in fields related to space, engineering and science.

During the visit, the middle school students learned about engineering projects that the college students work on, such as designing equipment for a miniature space satellite that will measure changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.  The young students also built model rockets, which they launched outside when they were finished.

More important than building rockets, students were building connections while listening to the engineering students share stories of their paths to the University of Michigan College of Engineering.

Thank you to Professor Mark Moldwin and the Student Space Systems Fabrications Lab for hosting this event!
