Professor Bougher discusses MAVEN with Western Michigan radio station

Professor Stephen Bougher discussed the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission with the Western Michigan University (WMUK) radio station.

MAVEN is “designed to look at the atmosphere of Mars and find out how that atmosphere might have changed over time,” Bougher says. For example, it’s possible that Mars was not always cold and dry, and may have once been able to support microbial life.

The MAVEN spacecraft is different from the Curiosity rover because it will look at the atmosphere while Curiosity looks at the surface.

The idea of MAVEN has been around for 30 years, so watching it come to fruition is a “testament to perseverance,” Bougher says.

Bougher will be speaking about MAVEN at the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics & Science Center on Friday, September 13 at 7:00 PM.
