Professor Atreya discusses absence of methane on Mars with New York Times

Professor Sushil Atreya told the New York Times, “You don’t have direct evidence that there is a microbial process going on,” in reference to the absence of methane on Mars.

The New York Times article explained that the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) has not found any evidence of methane on Mars despite a year of searching, which is not hopeful in terms of life on Mars.

Atreya said he thought highly reactive chemicals on the Martian surface could have destroyed the methane on Mars, but “that’s not panning out.”
