Alumnus quoted in NYT coverage of W. Va. toxic spill

Alumnus Joe Merchant (M.Eng. ’08), a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, spoke with the New York Times about the West Virginia toxic spill.

The article, entitled, “One Month After Toxic Spill, West Virginians Face ‘Crisis of Confidence’,” explained that West Virginia residents have come to trust their nose more than tests from authorities when it comes to leaked chemicals in the water.

Merchant told the Times that federal health officials had “refused to communicate uncertainty, and completely lost credibility with the people here.”
