Professor Rood named co-chair of UCACN Model Advisory Committee Professor Ricky Rood

In March 2015, the director of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), William Lapenta, requested the formation of a modeling advisory committee to provide a comprehensive strategy for the development of the NCEP Prediction Suite.

Professor Ricky Rood and University of Oklahoma Professor Fred Carr have been named co-chairs of the committee, which serves UCACN (the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Community Advisory Committee for NCEP).

The NCEP Production Suite currently includes nowcasting and short-range predictions, regional hurricane prediction, medium-range weather prediction, and monthly and seasonal forecasts. The charge of the committee also includes space weather, hydrological forecasts, coastal and oceanic wave modeling, and tsunami warnings.

According to Rood, the formation of this committee marks the first time that NCEP has taken on such a strategic undertaking.

In other news, Rood has also been asked to serve as one of three outside expert consultants for the Dycore Test Group. This group’s goal is to recommend the dynamical core for the primary operational forecast model, the Next Generation Global Prediction System. The Dycore Test Group will review the technical aspects of all dycore testing and provide an assessment of test results in written reports to National Weather Service management for each of the candidate dynamical core codes.
