Professor Samson writes about large class engagement for Educause

“Every instructor who walks into a classroom wants to teach well,” Professor Perry Samson wrote in a recent article for Educause Review. “But not all instructors have received pedagogical training, and most are juggling multiple tasks in research and service as well as teaching.”

Samson explains that when his course “Extreme Weather” began to average about 200 students per semester, he realized that he needed to create a system with real-time, in-class tools to understand what was happening in his classroom. He created LectureTools, which was acquired by Echo360 and has been integrated into its Active Learning Platform.

“The Active Learning Platform allows students to answer questions, ask questions, take notes, and indicate confusion, with each action linked to the spot in the lecture video where the action was taken,” Samson writes. It can also be run entirely with PowerPoint.
