CLaSP students volunteer at Chelsea Schools PTO “Geography Night” Anthony Torres (l), Agnit Mukhopadhyay (r)

Climate & Space graduate students Anthony Torres and Agnit Mukhopadhyay lent a hand last Friday to the Chelsea, MI PTO. The two were volunteers at the school district’s “Geography Night” aimed at kindergartener through fifth-graders and their families.

“The event is a volunteer-driven expo-style evening with games, food, and other activities,” said Dr. Dan Welling, Chelsea parent and CLaSP researcher. “Volunteers run stations dedicated to a certain state, country, or region of their preference.”

Torres and Mukhopadhyay manned a table representing Bengal, India. Their station featured food and clothing, as well as photos, and other information about the region.

Local media reported attendance in the hundreds at the village’s Washington Street Education Center.

“This is a way to give kids a hands-on way to experience fun activities beyond the classroom,” said Bethany Goesmann, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s encouraging that so many families came out on a Friday night to participate.”

Way to go, Anthony and Agnit!
